Pioneering In New Mexico by Mary E. Stoneman
(Mary "Mollie" E. (Bilberry) Stoneman)
Now out of Print
Printed by Sleeping Fox Enterprises, P.O.Box 1322,
Santa Fe, New Mexico 87501

Forward: More than the story of one woman's life: it is also a biography of
the land in a time not so long ago but already vanished, and of the people who
lived on that land. It is therefore a valuable record of regional history,
and for this we are indebted to Mrs. Stoneman.
Sandra Prewitt Edelman, Senior Editor, Sunstone Press

Here are paragraphs 4-8 of the book.

My pioneering began at a very early age. My people, the Bilberrys, left Mason
County when I was one year old. They had traded their farms for cattle and
headed for the Sacramento Mountains in New Mexico Territory, hoping to become
ranchers. They took the route over the south plains by way of Lamesa, Texas, and
Shafter Lake. It was a long sandy trip, with seven families each in its own
wagon with their household goods and children. The men drove the herd. The day
before they started the community gave them a farewell dinner. About ten days
later the children in the caravan all came down with the whooping cough. Seven
women, twenty-five whooping children and one hundred and fifty heads of
cattle driven by green Cowboys fought their way over deep sandy roads. To add to
their problems, there was a great scarcity of wood and water.
They were pioneers from birth and had what it took to develop the frontier.
This time, though, they had bitten off more than they could chew. They finally
reached the Pecos River and crossed at Roswell, which at that time was just a
post office.
Some of them stopped on the Ochekeet and some on James Canyon. My dad chose
James Canyon. They built houses, Uncle Esaw and my dad making shingles, out of
pine trees. Aunt Susie gave birth to her seventh child, a girl named Josie.
Since the trip had taken longer than anyone had expected, they hardly got
settled before it began to snow. Their stock was not acclimated; therefore, they
traded their cattle for goats. Often I've heard my oldest brother tell about
cutting down pine trees to make bridges so the goats could cross snow-filled
arroyos, or, about digging, goats out of snowdrifts. He never liked pine timber
or goats much after that.
The small community had plenty of cabbage, turnips and potatoes stored away
for winter. These were easy to get, but they had to haul their other supplies
from Pecos, Texas, over undeveloped roads. My oldest sister and two brothers
went to a little log schoolhouse when the weather permitted and they did not
have to dig goats out of snowdrifts. The schoolhouse sat near a farm owned by a
Mr. Evans who raised onions. In the spring, pupils often got into Mr. Evans'
green onions. Mr. Glosbenner rounded them up and gave them a sound thrashing,
but my brothers and sister were not guilty. They didn't like green onions.
Also, here is Mollie's family, starting with her father Henry Herrod Bilberry.
I would appreciate any full birth or death dates that I don't have. Thanks.
