Good Morning,
A DANIEL researcher recently sent me a FTW file which contained her
DANIEL ancestors for me to look at. First, I am not a subscriber to
www.genealogy.com nor have I ever purchased any of their products. Now, I
know why -- their products are old and antiquated by today's computer
standards. About the only thing that is not antiquated about their programs
is the price. <grin>
Regardless, I downloaded their free Family Archive Viewer 6.0 to allow
me to open this FTW file. Guess what, it would not open this file because
the most recent version of their Family Archive Viewer said my FTW file was
newer than the latest version of their viewer. <grin> A quick check
revealed the latest version of their program was only written for Windows
95/98 and I am running an operating system two levels newer than any program
they have available. No wonder so many people have problems with their
genealogical programs. <grin>
Needless to say, I removed this FAV program from my computer probably
much faster than it went on. I also found out their free viewer would only
support looking at the names of 20 people and if you wanted to look at all
of them then you had to buy their Family Tree Maker. Well, I will do
neither and will depend on my Personal Ancestry (PAF) program from the LDS
website -- which is free for the taking.
So, if you would like to exchange information with me, do so via of a
GEDCOM, which is the universal format for the exchange of genealogical
information. If you want to download a good PAF program, you can do so "for
free' at:

http://www.familysearch.org/ -- just follow the link from their main menu's
"Order Products/Download" and then follow the Yellow Brick Road: to
"Software Downloads "Free" They will force you to register this program and
it is about 10 megabytes but it is the best genealogical program out there
and it is bullet proof.
