I'm new to the list and hopefully this will help in filling in my family
tree.
My GGGrandfather was Michael Gilligan b abt 1823, son of Michael Gilligan
and Winefred Kivlehan. Michael came to the US sometime before 1857. He
married Mary Cullen in Dubuque Co. IA in 1857. They were farmers and
lived in Bankston. Only my GGrandfather Michael Vincent married of all
Michael and Mary's children. Stories that have come down through the
family lead me to believe that Michael was not the only one of his family
to come. Stories of writing some relatives in NY around the turn of the
century, but there must have been a falling out and the writing stopped.
There were also some pictures in my Grandfather's possession some of
which had the name Mrs. Julia Gilligan or just Julia Gilligan on them.
These pictures have not been found the last few years since Grandma
passed away. The picture's of Julia were taken in various photography
studios around Cedar Rapids, IA.
I can only guess where they came from in Ireland based on meeting a
entainer who was also a Kivlehan but related to Gilligans from Co. Sligo.
I'd like to locate members of Julia Gilligan's family. A Julia Gilligan
widow is listed on the 1885 State Census in Cedar Rapids in the 3rd ward.
This Julia is age 54 or 56 and born in Ireland. Children listed living
with her are;
John W. Laborer b NY age 25
Peter J. " NJ 22
Alise " 21
Martin " 20
Katie PA 18
Elizabeth " 14
Age at birthdate in 1884
I do not find this family on the 1880 Census.
Would anyone be related or know of any of these Gilligans?
