Several researchers are trying to trace the last wife of my 3rd great grandfather who was said to be a woman named Amanda, however, we have been unable to locate documentation of the marriage at this point. What we have found was a woman in the 1930 census named Amanda Newberry, who was probably Amanda Jane Elliot Epla. She was living in California at the time of her death in 1930, and her son Harlan lived close by in Sacremento.
Does anyone know the history of Amanda? We believe that her father and mother were as follows by the census.
Jesse Elliott in the 1860 Indiana Census, 44, b. KY, wife Nancy, b. IN, daughter Amanda J., 4, b. IN.
Then in the 1870 Iowa Census, Lucas, Otter Creek, there is Jesse Elliot, 54, b., KY, Nancy, 52, b. IN, and daughter Amanda, 15, b. IN.
In Amanda's obituary her birthplace is listed as Indiana around 1855.
We believe this may be the Amanda to whom our James Newberry was married in Mills or Pottawattamie Co. Iowa. She was only married to him for a short time, as she was only a teenager, and he was a very old man in his 80's. We believe they were married somewhere between Jan. 1870 and 1875. She sells property with him in Council Bluffs, and signs away her dower right at the time. After that date she disappears from the record and James goes to live with his daughter and her husband until his death in July of 1880.
