This is good info. The articles I have say he murdered the conductor of the
train and was shot himself at the train site. There was a shootout and his gang
fled ,leaving him.He was taken to jail and 3 or 4 days later was hanged.
Swift justice.
When I was young the family story always went that he was a horse thief and
was hung for that. It wasn't until I did research 5 or 6 years ago that I
found out he was an actual outlaw. Your description makes me want to take a trip
there. Maybe when we retire............Thanks for the info. Joyce

Speaking of Black Jack Ketchum, he was hanged in Clayton, New Mexico in
April 1901 for a train robbery. The only man ever hung for that offense in
New Mexico. The Union County had never done a hanging before, nor has one
been done since, but the sheriff had a scaffold built but miscalculated the
drop. As a result Black Jack was decapitated.
The hotel is still there in Clayton and has good lunches, a fine collection
of beers and pictures of the hanging in the bar. If you are ever on US 64 on
the way to Raton, NM it's a good stop. Most of the town still looks as it
did at the turn of the last century.
