“Troy is an immoral Sabbath breaking city says Rev George Wood Anderson of
the State Street Methodist Church. He has spent the day roaming incognito thru
the heart of the city, investigating whether local saloons abided by Raines
law which requires them to stay closed all Sunday. Saloon owners are obliged
to keep their windows uncurtained so police and passerby can verify no one is
drinking or selling alcolhol.Rev Anderson visits 40 saloons open for
business in defiance of the law. He has purchased ten bottles of whiskey; in one
case a bartender filled an empty catsup bottle because he had run out of proper
liquor bottles. The Rev says he saw many well dressed people in these ugly,
smelly places. Worse there were almost as many women as men smoking, drinking
and cursing. On two occasions he saw policemen look thru the window or step
inside and do nothing. Rev C. Waldo Cherry of the second Presbyterian Church
concurs and on his walk around not only saloons but pool rooms and cigar
stores were open."
