“The NY Republican state committee has endorsed Gov Charles Evans Hughes for
the party’s presidential nomination. Meanwhile President Theodore Roosevelt
has thrown his influence behind William Howard Taft,his Secretary of War, and
Taft currently leads the field in committed delegates. The 1908 election
comes in a time of economic uncertainty."

“There is a horrific fire in Collingwood , Ohio, a suburb of Cleaveland,at a
primary school. The final death toll is 172 children, 2 teachers and 1 would
be rescuer. A longterm consequence is the adoption of panic doors in schools
that enable people to open by pressing on a levered bar.
The NY State assembly is currently debating whether to continue the practice
of daily bible reading in NY public schools. A pulse of the people letter
says Each person listening to the word read may interpret it in their own way
and to their needs. "
