Hi baseball fans. I have my own little posting re: Troy and baseball: My
grandfather, Mike Sweeney, born in Troy in 1880, was orphaned in 1896. Both
of his parents died within days of each other at 683 Burden Ave in South
Troy. My grandfather then went to a military school along the Hudson to work
his way through high school. He then played baseball and always talked about
"the year we won the pennant." He has a pin, now in my possession that reads
" H. R. League, Po'keepsie N.Y. 1904." I don't know what level of league
this was but I do know that he traveled and played in Geneva, NY where he
met my grandmother. Here is where the story gets romantic. When the baseball
team came to town the local girls would prepare box lunches for the players.
Each lunch would have an assigned name to it. When my grandmother, no
shrinking violet, saw my grandfather...all 5'3" of blue-eyed Irishman...she
traded her box lunch with some other player's name on it for the box lunch
with his name on it. The rest, as they say, is history. They married in
1911 and lived in Rochester, NY where my grandfather became a very
successful paving contractor. Amy LaPietra

These are such interesting and helpful posts. I have my own if it could ring
any bells
with other listers. My great grandfather William E. Fitzgerald b.1832 in
Limerick who came to Troy
about 1850 with his brother (name ?) probably married and then moved to St.
Louis after
his wife died.
