“The City of Troy has submitted its final budget estimate for 1908, an
increase of nearly 5000$ over the preliminary budget approved earlier in the
year. The budget anticipates that Troy will have to pay $998,686.84 by years
end.The city must approve the preliminary budget in order to borrow money to meet
expenses during the year .Approval of the final estimate is necessary before
the city can collect taxes in the fall. The estimate is 70,000 over last year,
1907. The extra 5,000 is due to Septembers Troy Week Celebration and is
mostly for police and fire. The public safety department has acquired a patrol
wagon, hired 4 new sergeants and outfitted a mounted patrol this year. The fire
dept has purchased new chemical wagons and new equipment for one of its fire
trucks this year.An economic slump, beginning late last year is also a
factor, because of the higher interest rates with the city borrowing at 5 percent
instead of 4 percent.
At the Rensselaer County Agricultural and Horticultural Society's annual
fair, held at Rensselaer Park in Lansingburgh has had nearly 40,000 people pass
thru the gates. A race between horses Sweet Marie and George G, driven by
Alta McDonald wins George G THE 3,000 Chamber of Commerce Stakes in two straight
heats.
