Tuesday Sept 16,2008 Troy Record article This day in History for Wednesday
Sept 16,1908
"A Troy policeman ,Thomas F. Gaffney of the First Precinct,is dismissed from
the police force for being absent from his post and intoxication while on
duty.He pled guilty to going AWOL from duty but denied the intoxication,
explaining he collapsed from exhaustion after tending his sick wife for 2 straight
weeks and being denied a half day sick leave by his Captain,Mathew Green. The
report says Gaffney returned from dinner and went on patrol duty at 2 o'clock
on Sept 4. He was taken ill with an attack that left him weakened and he
fell asleep at the corner of Jackson and Second street. He awakened at 5 o'clock,
made a tour of his post and reported at the station house shortly after 6.
Gaffney admitted he had taken a few drinks of brandy at dinner but denies
indulging any intoxicants while on duty.Green says he was under orders during Old
Home Week to approve any leave."
