“ A horrific fire at the United Waste Company plant on Jackson Street,one of
the largest waste manufacturing plants in the state, started when a spark
from the dynamo ignited Anne Rumnicks dress. She shouted fire and there was a
stampede for the exits but so quickly did the waste ignite in the bailing room
that the stairways were shut off and the windows the only way out. The fire
traveled up the elevator passageway to the second floor. An automatic
sprinkler system activated on and it was connected to the Osgood fire company
steamer house setting off the alarm. While some of the firemen subdue the flames
others take the women from the building.The fire is brought under control in an
hour.However Katie Dehoris, panicked, jumps from the second floor but
survives. Another jumper Anna Susco suffers a broken arm while Parasco McCarthy and
Kate Susco are treated for burns and bruises.Anne Rumicks face is burned
beyond recognition.The estimated loss is $50,000 (500,000 today).The crowd
outside had to be held back "
