“The city’s 4 precinct captains informed their men on payday yesterday that
they would be asked to contribute sums based on their rank to the Republican
Party. The captains are expected to contribute 35$( nearly 500 today's
money),sergeants and detectives 25,patrolman 15 and janitors 10$. Mayor Mann
denies authorizing this solicitation and says he will look into the matter. It is
found that the financial source has been engineered by an attaché of the
district attorneys office. DA Jarvis P O’Brien is running for a third term
against Magistrate Abbott H Jones. Reports are that Mayor Mann had refused to give
the nominating speech for O’Brien at the recent county convention. One
sergeant has refused point plank to give the money citing the present condition of
times and a cold winter. Others have threatened to go to the mayor if they
are asked for money again.
The Democrats nominate a Sandy Hill wallpaper manufacturer Winfield A.
Happuch as their candidate for the 22nd district. A former village president,
Happuch runs Standard Wall Paper, one of the worlds largest wallpaper companies.
