“Organizers of this year’s Hudson-Fulton celebration hope that Troy’s
role in the statewide commemoration will a bigger boost to the city than last
year’s Troy Week event, The Record reports.Years in the making, the
Hudson-Fulton celebration marks the 300th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s 1609
voyage up the river that now bears his name. It incorporates an overdue
commemoration of Robert Fulton’s pioneer steamboat
journey up the Hudson in 1807.“While, Mr. Cornelius Burns said, the
merchants have had considerable to contend with during the past few years
[following a 1907 financial panic], still this opportunity is one which
they should not permit to pass without grasping.”The committee approves a
provisional program a three-
day celebration beginning on October 7, 1909. On that Thursday evening,
Mayor Mann will press a button to
light up a set of commemorative arches in downtown Troy. Churches
throughout the city will ring their bells, as will churches in Watervliet, Green
Island and Cohoes, while electrical street displays will run through most of
downtown.Watchfires will burn on Stow Hill, Carroll’s Hill, Prospect Park,
the 17th Street Grounds,
Mt. Olympus and Diamond Rock to illuminate the rest of the city. Open air
concerts will be given at Monument Square and at 12th [112th] Street Park
in Lansingburgh. The official Hudson-Fulton flotilla, including replicas of
Hudson and Fulton’s ships, will be in Albany on October 8.Rather than
attempt to upstage the Albany events that day, the Troy organizers will
concentrate on an educational program aimed at female audiences during the day,
followed by fireworks and a 1,000 member chorus at Prospect Park
that night. The flotilla will reach Troy on October 9. It will be honored
on “Troy Day” with a “monster parade,” including a massive collection of
floats illustrating Hudson River history. The floats will be traveling from
city
to city along the flotilla route during the celebration. A second parade
under torchlight will close out the celebration on Saturday evening.
NYSL BASEBALL. Mike Cunningham makes his first start in ten days for Troy’
s State League team this afternoon, but shows no signs of rust or soreness
as he takes a shutout into the eighth inning at Laureate Park, our
sportswriter reports.

“Since April 17, The Record has conducted business out of a new office
building at the corner of Broadway and Fifth Avenue. Today, the paper takes
readers on a guided tour of its ultra-modern headquarters.Apart from people
taking guided tours, most Trojans will see the office through the Broadway
entrance into the
business office, from which they can see the printing press in operation
through a glass wall on the left.
The office includes a system of electric clocks coordinated by a master
clock that “assures accurate time for every department.” Messages are relayed
from department to department through the building by a pneumatic tube
service. Advertising copy is conveyed to the composing department by the same
system, as are “other light articles.”
