Thursday August 13,2009 Troy Record Article 100 years ago Friday, Aug. 13,
1909.
“Contributions are coming in from leading citizens as the city of Troy
firms up plans for its part of the
statewide Hudson-Fulton celebration this fall, The Record reports.Troy is
expected to be the last stop of the international flotilla that will sail
up the Hudson river to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s
pioneering voyage and the belated centennial of Robert Fulton’s first
steamship voyage up the
river. Parades are planned for many of the stops along the way,and Troy
organizers are hoping to stage one of the largest.Arrangements remain
tentative after tonight’s meeting of the Hudson-Fulton parade committee, but
organizers’ ambitions continue to grow. “Military and fire companies from
different parts of the state
will participate,” our reporter notes, “and it is probable that the
column will contain at least 5,000 men. This will be the largest aggregation of
volunteer soldiers and firemen ever gathering at one time in this city,
and
the sight of the many marching men in the state service uniform and the
bright firemanic raiment will doubtless prove a pleasing spectacle to the
thousands of sightseers.”So far, fire companies from
Mechanicville, Watervliet, Waterford and Rensselaer have accepted
invitations to march in the parade, while outfits from Schenectady, Ballston,
Hoosick Falls, Stillwater, Green Island, Sand Lake, Hudson and Catskill
are expected to take part as well.“Arrangements are being made for the
purpose of accommodating the throng of paraders. The soldiers will be
quartered in the state armory and they will be fed there during their stay. Many of
the firemen will also be quartered in the building provided for the state’
s volunteer soldiers, while others will be entertained by local fire
companies.”Organizers are planning a second parade for Troy Day, October 9, which
will incorporate the city’s benevolent and ethnic societies. “The turn
out will be a
novel one, as the committee will endeavor to secure the appearance of
every organization representing a certain nation, including German, French,
Scotch, Danish, Irish and Italian societies,” our writer explains.
In addition, the committee has sent out invitations to yachtsmen
throughout New York for “the greatest naval parade ever attempted in this vicinity.
The yachts will join the flotilla, including replicas of Henry Hudson’s Half
Moon and Robert Fulton’s North River Steamboat (a.k.a. the Clermont), and
will be eligible for prizes.
The committee has also decided to award six handsome silver cups as prizes
for the yachtsmen.Three cups will go to the best dressed launches from an
historical sense and three to the launches most uniquely equipped.”
Troy Baseball The game is tied, 3-3, when Eddie Murphy comes out of the
dugout to protest Umpire Mather’s call of a play at the plate. Instead of
throwing Murphy out of the game, Mather disqualifies Troy for “dilatory tactics
” and awards the game to Syracuse.“Manager Murphy of Troy laid heavy
hands on Mather,”
according to a wire report, “but the police saved the official from a
beating.” The loss drops the fifth-place Trojans back to .500 for the season.
