She may have fudged her age a few years for the census. If she was
born in 1852 she would have been 28 in 1880 and 38 in 1900. It was
usually around 30 that the women started "dropping" a few years. I
have a great-grandmother who "lost" nine years between 1880 and 1900.
Also, could her name have been Mary Elizabeth, Mary being a common
first name, then the second name the one actually used. Marianne Arnold
