O'BRIENS
Lynne,
I'll try to keep this from being too confusing---famous last words. My
gg grandparents are Matthew and Mary(Whittle)O'Brien who immigrated to
the west of Albany from Waterford around 1866. Their son John, my g
grandfather, married Jennie Welsh. The same property bordered by
Cordell Road was conveyed between the Welshs and the O'Briens. Jennie's
uncle Patrick Welsh conveyed this Cordell Road property to Matthew and
Mary sometime before 1868.
On July 20, 1868, Matthew and Mary convey the Cordell Road property that
they obtained from Patrick Welsh to John A O'Brien. The NEXT DAY, July
21, 1868, John A. and Maria (Brennan)O'Brien convey the same property
back to Matthew's wife Mary O'Brien in her sole name(I assume that this
back and forth conveyance was a way of putting the property in Mary's
sole name to avoid tax or for some similar reason)
I think that Matthew and Mary O'Brien were likely related to John A. and
Maria O'Brien. I would think that's the reason that they trusted one
another for this back and forth transaction.
The history of John A. and Maria O'Brien from the records is as follows:
1880 Census: Watervliet Town(later Colonie) John O'Brien,30 farmer,
Maria 28, Alice 2, Catherine 3mo. Next door are
Catherine(Powers)O'Brien,50 widow, Edward 20, Catherine 22, William 16,
Alice 12 (So 50 year old Catherine Powers O'Brien is mother of John
married to Maria Brennan and the mother of Edward, Catherine, William
and Alice.
1900 Census: Colonie (formerly Watervliet Town) John O'Brien 50 farmer,
Maria (married around 1876), Alice 22, Celia 20, John 16, James 14,
Elizabeth 12.
1910 Census: Troy Road, Colonie John A. O'Brien 65 truck farmer, Maria
E. 60 (mother of 7,5 now living), John E. 25, James G.22, Elizabeth 20
1920 Census: Troy Road, Colonie John A. O'Brien 70 widower, vegetable
farmer, James 32, Alice Dunn 41, John Dunn 43, Mary Dunn 18, John Dunn
16, Cecilia. Son,John O'Brien 34 and his wife Lilian 27 also live in
Colonie.
Death Cert and Obituary date of death for John Andrew O'Brien of Troy
Road, Menands is April 9, 1921. He was 77, his father was John O'Brien
of County Cork and his mother was Catherine Powers of Ireland. The
obituary indicates that he was the husband of the late Maria F.Brennan,
father of Mrs. John J. Dunn and Mrs. Edward Dignum, John E. and James J
O'Brien of Menands, and Mrs. John F. Loohy of Cohose, and brother of
Margaret Conroy of Albany and the Misses Catherine and Alice O'Brien of
Menands.
John Andrew O'Brien's parents:
1870 Census: Lisha Kill (not far from Cordell Road) John O'Brien 55,
Catherine(Powers)O'Brien 50, John 24, farmer (this has to be John
Andrew), Mary 22, Margaret 20, Hanora 18, Catherine 15, Edward 9,
William 6, Alice 2, Baby , Mary Conroy 5, Margaret Conroy 7, Catherine
Conroy 2 or 6 mo. (I don't see how Margaret Conroy 7 can be John
Andrew's sister as his obituary indicates---more likely is that one of
John Andrew's sisters married a Conroy and for some reason John Andrew's
Mother and Father were raising the Conroys as their own children causing
John Andrew to think of them as his sisters)
1860 Census: Watervliet,Irish Corners [DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE IRISH
CORNERS WAS?] John O'Brien 50, Catherine 40, John 17, Mary 15, Margaret
13, Hannah 8, Catherine 6, Edward 4 mo. (all BORN IN IRELAND meaning
that they immigrated in the summer of 1860 since the Census was taken in
October 1860)
BACK TO THE LAND CONFEYANCES:
John A. and Maria conveyed the Cordell Rd Property to Mary of Matthew
and Mary O'Brien in 1868
John A and Maria also conveyed property on the East Side of Troy Road in
Watervliet Town(Colonie or Menands)in 1893. Apparently, John A and
Maria owned the property with their children Edward and Emily O'Brien,
Mary A.(O'Brien)Cunningham, and with Margaret Conroy and
Hannah(Hanora)O'Brien. All of them joinded in the conveyance of the
property to Catherine and Alice O'Brien, the unmarried sisters of John
A. O'Brien( the "Misses" Catherine and Alice O'Brien of Menands in the
1921 Obituary)
SO,WHAT'S THE CONNECTION BETWEEN WITH MY MATTHEW AND MARY O'BRIEN:
34 year old Matthew and Mary O'Brien immigrated from Waterford City to
the Cordell Road area in 1866. This was very close to the Lisha Kill
and probably the Irish Corners area where 56 year old John O'Brien from
Cork and his wife Catherine Powers O'Brien lived. I think Matthew and
Mary came to where they had relatives. Matthew and Mary's first born
was Michael in 1856; I think John and Catherine's first born was John A.
in 1843. Typically, the Irish named the first born male after the
paternal grandfather. My guess is that Matthew had a father Michael and
that John had a father John and that this Michael and John were
brothers. So Matthew immigrated to where his Uncle John was living near
Lisha Kill. This would explain why Matthew and Mary were willing to
convey property to John A in 1868 with the confidence that the next day
he would convey it back to Mary in her sole estate. Under the law,
nothing would have required John A to deed the property back but if I'm
right then John A was Matthew's first cousin so it was safe.
There you go
