"AATroy’s New York State League baseball team welcomes the Syracuse Stars
to town for a three-game series this afternoon, The Record reports.,
Syracuse starter Robert Scott holds the Trojans to two hits over that span. His
Troy counterpart, Pete Wilson, allows ten hits all day,but the Stars only
manage to make them count in the top of the fifth. A two-run single by right
fielder Armbruster gives Syracuse a 2-0 lead that lasts into the ninth
inning. The rally starts with a single up the middle by center fielder Castle.
Left fielder Johnny
Duffy draws a walk, making second baseman Phil Poland the winning run at
the plate. With hard-hitting third baseman Jimmy Catiz at the plate, Syracuse
manager Ed Ashenback pulls Scott in favor of reliever Duggan. Catiz greets
Duggan with a single to left, scoring Duffy to tie the game and advancing
Poland to third.Ashenback tells Duggan to intentionally walk Eddie
McGamwell, but the Troy first baseman “doesn’t need any special rule to protect
himself from the pitcher who wants to pass him. Eddie can hit them anywhere.”
Former Troy center fielder Gene Goode makes the catch, but Poland has time
to tag up and head for home. He beats Goode’s throw to the plate to give
Troy a 3-2 victory, turning the Center Island crowd into “a convention of
lunatics.”
