"The absence of a Republican alderman delays approval of a $325,000 bond
issue for the construction of a new central school in the heart of Troy, The
Record reports. In the absence of Fred
Oothout, who represents the Third Ward, the Common Council’s finance
committee can only recommend approval of the bond issue. Former School 7
principal Russell, now the city’s assistant corporation
counsel, speaks in favor of the bond issue this evening. Attending tonight’
s meeting with another agenda is a private citizen, Charles Mayer. He’s
drafted a resolution that would ban films of Jack Johnson’s controversial
July 4 title defense against former champ Jim Jeffries from being shown in
Troy, but he needs an alderman to sponsor it."

“Troy’s New York State League baseball team is scheduled to play the
Albany Senators at Chadwick Park this Sunday, but the game won’t happen if the
Albany County Sheriff can help it.
The Record reports that Sheriff Lansing I. Pratt has announced his
intention to prevent the Senators from hosting the Trojans, joining a new crackdown
on Sunday baseball in New York State. The crackdown began when concerned
citizens of Chemung County petitioned Gov. Charles Evans Hughes to remove
their
sheriff, T. Stanley Day, for failing to enforce the state Sabbath laws
against public amusements, including professional baseball in Elmira. TROY
PRINCIPAL ELECTED.Kate Mahoney, the principal of School No. 1 in Troy, has
been elected president of the Ladies Catholic Benevolent Association at its
national convention in Cleveland, our paper reports.Mahoney has been an
executive in the association for the past several years while carrying on her
school duties in Troy. The Trojan succeeds Mrs. E.H. McGowan of Buffalo, who
is
stepping down after 20 years as the association president. Mahoney
narrowly defeated Felice Gerwedol of Detroit in the balloting, 363-314. MAYOR’S
LOSS. A historic Rensselaer structure owned by Mayor Elias P. Mann of Troy has
been destroyed by fire tonight,The Record reports. The mayor’s property was
known as the Historic Half-Way House. The “massive frame structure of
three stories” was built as a summer hotel, but a succession of owners and
managers failed to make it turn a profit, despite its location next door to a
once-popular racetrack. It has been unoccupied for the past year."
