To both Rich and James,
Genealogy Bank is a treasure of information. Like both of you I found
unexpected info. My elusive Gideon C. Jones (great-great-
grandfather), lived in San Francisco, found him on the census, a few
other tidbits. Then I signed on to Genealogy Bank and discovered he
was part of a plot to outfit a ship - the Chapman - to prey on
American shipping during the Civil War. He managed to squeeze out of
that charge, not enough evidence, but ended up in Ft. Churchill in
Nevada anyway for treason, as a "brawling secessionist"! I still
haven't discovered what that was all about.
His daughter, my great-grandmother, concocted a marvelous story for
her children about First Family of Virginia ancestry, which it took me
15 years to disprove. His granddaughter told me, "We were never told
anything about Gideon Jones". Now I know why!
So by all means check out Genealogy Bank. But be prepared for the
unexpected. Marianne Arnold
