Dale,

Genealogical information from Salem, Ohio, Quaker meeting records appears in
volume 4 of William Wade Hinshaw's _Encyclopedia of American Quaker
Genealogy_. In particular, on page 697 of that volume, we find information
regarding the marriage of William and Martha. I'll give it here with
abbreviations expanded: "1842, 10,26. William [Daniel], son of William and
Rachel, Columbiana County, Ohio, born 1821,1,17 (or 1821,1,21) died
1902,2,12; married at Salem, Martha Stratton, daughter of Charles and
Hannah, born 1821,12,1" This record is marked (G) showing that it came from
records held by the Gurney party after the split of 1854.

A little further down the page we find the notation that on 1838,11,21,
"William Daniels, minor, was received into membership on a certificate from
Sadsbury Monthly Meeting, Pennsylvania, dated 1838,10,2."

Sadsbury meeting, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, was founded in 1737.
It is in or near the town of Christiana. Its records are in the lifraries
of Swarthmore and Haverford Colleges in the Philadelphia. The LDS has
filmed these records; the film numbers are 20420 and 20482.

Subject: [Q-R] William Daniel of Salem, Ohio MM

Hi,

This is my first whack at this avenue of information gathering, but here
goes.

I am trying to make the connections from William Daniel's birth in
Lancaster, PA in 1821 to his death in Salem, OH in 1902. He is the son of
William Daniel, who is the son of Andrew Daniel. I would like to establish
William Daniel's progress from one MM to another, but only know that he
spent the last 50 some years of his life at Salem.

He was married to Martha Stratton, daughter of Charles Stratton and, as far
as I know, William and Martha had no children.

I have more information on William juniors siblings, some of it a bit
confusing, and on William senior and his wife, Rachel Gibbons and her
forbears. Also have a bit more information Andrew Daniel, his wife and
forbears.

The only positive documentation I have in all of this includes an original
Quaker Marriage Certificate for William and Rachel naming their parents,
where the wedding took place and of course the date of the wedding, 12th
day of first month 1804. Lots of witnessing signatures from both sides of
family and others. The document also states that Andrew Daniel is deceased
at the time of the wedding. Another undocumented source indicates that he
died in 1802.

Another source of documentation that I possess is several volumes of a
journal that William junior kept from 21st day, 8th month of 1851 to the
last day of 1884. The journals indicate that I have volumes 4 through
seven. So presumably there were three prior to the first in my
possession. I have no way of knowing if he continued keeping journals
beyond the seventh. I have undocumented information that he died in Salem,
OH in 1902.

The journals have been a great source of additional information on other
family connections, including his sister Rebecca, who is my ggg grandmother.

The journals indicate that William and his wife Martha were very active in
the Salem MM and attended many quarterly meetings and at least one yearly
meeting, that being in Richmond, Indiana in from 1st day, 10th month of
1862 to 7th day. At that meeting William describes many of the sessions
that he attended, including committees and times of worship. He also
describes the train(cars) trip to and from the meeting and the family
visits on the return trip.

Much of the material in the journals is undecipherable to me, but much is
clear and informative, down to the mention of my paternal grandfather, who
would have been about 5 years old at the time. Many names are mentioned
which mean absolutely nothing to me, but among those are some which are
designated as relatives, e.g. Aunt, Uncle, Cousin.

Any help would be appreciated and, of course, I would be happy to pass
along any information that I can glean from my limited sources that might
be of use to any concerned.

Dale
