1870 Federal Census of the Township of Manchester, Ocean County, New
Jersey on 19 August 1870 (Series M593, Reel 883, Page 100b, Line 57)
Dwelling 36, Family 50:

Mary Schumard, 40, F, W, Keeps House, Born NJ

This is probably the second wife of Joseph W. Shumard, Mary Ann,
widowed by his death in 1868. Mary Ann was born in 1818 and was first
shown with Joseph in the Dover Township, Ocean County, New Jersey
census of 1850 as Mary Johnson, 35 with George Reaves, 6, and Nancy
Johnson, 3. Joseph's first wife, Lydia Johnson died in 1848. In
1860, Mary, 40 was shown along with Nancy, 12, Richmond, 7, Rhoda, 4,
and Alice, 2. Joseph's will executed in 1865 did not mention Nancy.
Mary died in 1878 at the age of 60. In the subject census, Mary could
not read or write which may explain the differing ages reported. Mary
was probably a sister in law of Lydia.
