Bonjour, listers! For background on the interplay of forces in the
Caribbean during the time of the American War for Independence - read the
most interesting "The First Salute" by noted historian Barbara Tuchman.
Almost the whole first one-third of this 300 page book deals with essential
events in West Indies that bore on or influenced the course of that war - or
presaged it. It includes many West Indian surnames and references; there is
quite a lot about 'Statia.
Clarifies the understanding - and is a good read, too.
Alfred Knopf, publisher - 1988 - ISBN 0-394-55333-0. Should be findable in
many second-hand/used book stores.
Cheers to all,
