Subject: [USVI] St. Thomas Cemeteries.

Recently I visited St. Thomas, USVI and it seems that there is an increasing
interest in genealogy, preserving heritage, etc. that just wasn't there 5 or
10 years ago. While there, I went to an exhibit at the VI Cultural Heritage
Institute called 'Last Rites' which was essentially ohotgraphs about the
cemeteries and burial customs in the islands. The old 'Danish Cemetery' (by
the old Knud-Hansen Hospital) has been completely cleaned up, mapped out,
photographed, and a book was also made... they did a wonderful job.
My understanding is that the plan is to do a similar project for the Western
Cemetery.. It will definitely be a tougher project, given the general
disrepair and practices of that cemetery. It is encouraging that at least
there is some interest and attention being given to these cemeteries.
Virgin Islands Cultural Heritage Institute is located at 5-6 Kongens Gade,
Charlotte Amalie.
